Are we close to making human ‘mind control’ a reality?
With one tap on his space bar, Andrea Stocco fires the cannon on his computer game and blows a rocket out of the sky.
What is remarkable is the way it is being played because the University of Washington researcher can't actually see it.
The person who can, fellow scientist Rajesh Rao, is sitting across campus looking at the screen.
He
is wearing a cap with wires coming out of it (which looks like
something you might have seen in a 1950s sci-fi programme that was
imagining this moment).
Without moving a muscle, or using a communication device, Mr Rao told his colleague to fire the cannon at just the right moment.
The only thing Mr Rao had was the power of his mind, so, at the right moment, he imagined firing the cannon.
This
sent a signal via the internet to Mr Stocco, who, wearing
noise-cancelling earphones (and a purple swimming cap) involuntarily
moved his right index finger to push the space bar.
Imperius curse
What has just happened seems to be the first documented case of human-to-human "mind control".
The researchers gave it the rather less alluring title of human-to-human brain interface, but that's scientists for you.
Until now this concept remained in the realms of theory, or more likely science fiction and fantasy.
Those
of a wizarding persuasion will see parallels with the evil Voldemort's
Imperius curse, used to manipulate people in the Harry Potter stories.
Mr Stocco jokingly refers to the experiment as a
"Vulcan mind meld", after a technique employed by Mr Spock in Star Trek
to share thoughts.
"The internet was a way to connect computers, and now it can be a way to connect brains," Mr Stocco says.
He compares the feeling of his hand moving to that of a nervous tic.
Mr
Rao says it was "both exciting and eerie" to watch an imagined action
from his brain get translated into actual action by another brain.
"The next step is having a more equitable two-way conversation directly between the two brains," he adds.
Brain activity
There are already numerous examples of the human brain being used to control technology.
For example, Samsung is experimenting with a mind-control tablet.
Technology
firm Interaxon is marketing a "brain sensing headband" that it hopes
will allow people to control devices with their minds.
It is already widely used to help those with physical disabilities.
Indeed the technology for recording and stimulating the two researchers' brains in this experiment are both well-known.
Brain signals from the "Sender" are
recorded. When the computer detects imagined hand movements, a "fire"
command is transmitted over the internet, causing an upward movement of
the hand of the "Receiver"
Electroencephalography - the technique used to send the message from
Mr Rao - is routinely used by the medical profession to record brain
activity from the scalp.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation -
which made Mr Stocco's finger move - is a way of delivering stimulation
to the brain to prompt a response.
But putting the two together, effectively allowing one person to direct the responses of another, is new.
'Trivial'
The researchers are quick to point out that this experiment is very basic in terms of the concept.
But
Daniel Wilson, who has a PhD in robotics and is the author of
Robopocalypse, says it remains important as a "proof of concept"
experiment.
"It has sparked a discussion of how brain-to-brain interfaces might impact society in the future," he says.
"Although the experimental set-up is too narrow to have practical value, it certainly makes us think."
However, others are unimpressed.
Dr
Ian Pearson, a futurologist with a background in science and
engineering, compares it to experiments by Australian performance artist
Stelarc 15 years ago.
He enabled people to remote control his limbs via the internet.
"Adding a simple thought recognition control system is pretty trivial," Dr Pearson says.
"If they were taking a thought from one person and directly creating a thought in another then I'd be impressed."
Collaboration
There
is more general agreement on the impact that future developments in
this field could have on the way humans collaborate and communicate.
Mr
Stocco says that one day it could be used to enable someone on the
ground to help a passenger land an aeroplane if the pilot becomes
incapacitated.

Having attracted towards flying machines from my childhood, I always
wanted to make a copter or some flying machine for myself. So I decided
to learn some basics for building one. I went through some stuff on the
internet and found a Quadcopter would be cool !
In here let us see what a quadcopter is and its basics. There are
different models of quadcopters. But to begin with let us see a simple model. The below image shows one.
Basically a Quadcopter is a quadrotor helicopter that is lifted and
propelled by four rotors. Unlike helicopters they use symmetrically
pitched blades. Control of vehicle motion is achieved by altering the
pitch and/or rotation rate of one or more rotor discs, thereby changing
its torque load and thrust/lift characteristics. Check the image below
for the principle behind the quad’s motion.
As you can see, the motors 1 and 4 rotate in CW direction while 3 and
2 rotate CCW thus creating a downward thrust which lifts the quad. By
varying the speed of the 4 rotors various movements are possible. There
are three important terms mentioned above namely the YAW , ROLL and
PITCH which we must have a clear concept of before understanding the
quad’s movement.
Here Yaw = Rudder , Roll = Aileron and Pitch = Elevator. Having these
in mind, Look at the following image to get knowledge of the various
motions of the quadcopter.
Check the notes section of the above image for the motor control mechanism for particular movement of quad.
Having done with the basic quad’s principle and movement, Lets us see
what are the basic parts necessary to construct a quadcopter. Frame:
This is the most basic and important part of the quadcopter. You can
mount your brushless motors, power cells and other electronic equipement
on it easily. You can even create your own frame. Just make sure your
frame is firm and stable. Brushless Motors :
Brushless motors are commonly used in RC. Brushless motors have three
wires. These wires control the motor’s three phases. When connecting
the motor to it’s ESC (Electronic Speed Controller), it doesn’t actually
matter how you connect the wires to let it spin because you want two
motors to rotate CW and other two to rotate CCW. So it is just by trail
and error method you fix these wires. Electronic Speed Controller(ESC):
The three-phased brushless motor are controlled by the Electronic
Speed Controller (ESC). The ESC has three pairs of wires: current
supply(2 thick) / motor wires (3 thick) / controller wire (3 small). Propellers :
For your quadcopter, you’ll need a equal numbers of CW (clowckwise)
and CCW (counter-clockwise) propellers. This will ensure that your
copter will not spin around. Control Board :
A multicopter control board is the essential part of your
multicopter. It’s the heart of the copter and controls the motor’s
independently and corrects for equal balancing. Transmitter and Receiver :
You will need a transmitter and a receiver to control you copter.
There are a wide variety of channels of transmitter available. Four
channels is enough for a multicopter in general. Batteries : Lithium Polymer batteries are used for
powering your multicopter. LiPo batteries are available in wide range.
The one that fits your need can be used.
So that is all you need to create a Quadcopter. I’m will post the construction of my quad as soon as I complete it. :) Check Videos of quadcopter on Youtube. There are various stunts that can be performed with these :D
Fingerprint identification, known as dactyloscopy,[8] or hand print identification, is the process of comparing two instances of friction ridge skin impressions (see Minutiae),
from human fingers or toes, or even the palm of the hand or sole of the
foot, to determine whether these impressions could have come from the
same individual. The flexibility of friction ridge skin means that no
two finger or palm prints are ever exactly alike in every detail; even
two impressions recorded immediately after each other from the same hand
may be slightly different. Fingerprint identification, also referred to
as individualization, involves an expert, or an expert computer system operating under threshold scoring
rules, determining whether two friction ridge impressions are likely to
have originated from the same finger or palm (or toe or sole).
FPC receives touch fingerprint sensor order of 75 MSEK
19 March, 2015
Fingerprint Cards (FPC) has received an order for its touch fingerprint sensor FPC1025 from one of its module partners. The order value is 75 MSEK and delivery will take place between March and July 2015. The sensors will be used by smartphone manufacturers in China. This order is included in the communicated revenue guidance of + 1 000 MSEK for 2015 that we restated in the Q4 2014 report on February 26th.
Jörgen Lantto, acting President and Chief Executive Officer of FPC, comments:“After the previously announced launches of Huawei Ascend Mate 7 (using FPC1020) and Oppo N3 (using FPC1021), multiple smartphone manufacturers in China have selected FPC1025 as their touch fingerprint sensor. This order confirms that FPC1025 will be integrated in smartphones to be launched progressively from Q2 2015 and onwards”.
Aim: At the end of the course the student will be able to analyze, design, and evaluate digital circuits, of medium complexity, that are based on SSIs, MSIs, and programmable logic devices. see more
